With the recent passing of Past President Wilton Hardy AIFD, I thought it would be fitting to learn a little more about our fabulous leader.
Wilton began his floral career at the age of fourteen at an open air, metal awning covered business that sold flowers by the bunch. Funeral business was their niche and oasis blocks were only used for high end arrangements at a whopping price point of twenty-five dollars and up. Hand tied sprays sold for ten dollars. Wilton worked in the floral industry for most of his life and served in the Army from 1957-1958. Hardy joined the AIFD family in 1973 and quickly became involved in many committees.
His Presidency during 1990-1991 only lasted for ten months and was the shortest of all the Presidents. In 1989 it was decided that symposium would be held in September because the Society of American Florists (SAF) Convention was planned for the same city, Dallas! Wilton served on the National Board for six years prior to becoming President. The first months were designated for selecting committees. During the Christmas holidays Wilton hand addressed and sent holiday cards to every member, which became a policy for a couple of years, and was later funded by AIFD.
During the ’91 Symposium, Derrick Vasquez AIFD presented the memorable wedding program still talked about today by those in attendance. The stage designs were filled with romantic cascades newly introduced. Ballerinas and premier dancers floated across the stage during this spectacular program.
Jason McCollum AIFD and Harvey Bresh AIFD created the Final Night Gala, “An Evening of Thanksgiving”. Décor tables were adorned with bundles of reeds that looked like corn stalks. Lilies, and orchids filled the room, and an elevated cornucopia with green Paphiopedlium orchids, Wilton’s favorite, was suspended above the Presidents table.
Bill Taylor AIFD was awarded the Distinguished Service to AIFD, Phil Rulloda AIFD the Award of Design Influence, Michael O’Neill AIFD, Sylvia Bird AIFD, Bill McKinley AIFD and Kurt Schroeder AIFD were just a few of the inductees in 1991.
Floral trends included romanticism, and beautiful ribbons and carnations were prevalent. Wilton received the Award of Distinguished service to AIFD in 1994.
