When Trisha Haisler AIFD asked me many weeks, (maybe months) ago to write something for the newsletter I said: “Of Course”, being one who can’t say no. Then I procrastinated until here it is January, and I expect a reminder call soon.
What to say, what to write about?
I kept thinking of the many folks who have been part of my AIFD journey. Jan Bjurstrom AIFD was the first AIFD member I actually engaged with. She was a guest designer at the wholesale house I worked for in Lansing, MI in the mid-80s. As the “house designer”, I was in charge of assisting whoever was appearing for our open house program. You know, things like getting coffee, lunch & prepping product etc.

Always a treat working with the “star” of the program, the time with Jan was extraordinary. Her experience in retail, sales & life in general was fascinating. Picking up great tips as we worked, she spoke to me about the benefits of AIFD membership – Wow, could I truly aspire?
She opened the door to wonderful opportunities, and I stepped through; it changed my life.
Jan became a member in 1972 and has a storied history as a hardworking, productive member who was made a “Fellow of AIFD” in 1984. She was committed to building membership, instrumental in the establishment of regional chapters, first president of North Central Chapter, and if you ever want any stories about the early days of AIFD, pour your favorite beverage and give her a call.
Her memory & wit continue to be razor sharp. I recently spent a few days with Jan at her home in Moline Il. A woman who has survived some tough stuff, she remains spunky, fun, curious & positive.
She had texted me earlier; to say she had just planted a new perennial bed! Not bad for a 96-year-old gal whose eyesight is nearly gone! Jan continues to live independently in her charming bungalow full of lovely artwork, and treasured mementos. Thanks to audio books, a part time assistant and a loving family, she leads an active, productive life.
Jan is simply one example of the many great influences/friendships afforded me by being part of the AIFD community. If you have time for about 20 or more articles I could go on – Bobbi Ecker Blatchford AIFD & Jim Moretz AIFD, both gone but not forgotten.
This is dangerous, but here goes:
Also – Bob Friese AIFD, Gary Wells AIFD, Loann Burke AIFD, George Mitchell AIFD, Laura Parker AIFD, Suzie Kostick AIFD, Kim Oldis AIFD, Robbin Yelverton AIFD, Jerome Raska AIFD, Debbie Strand AIFD; just a few who are part of my AIFD “tribe”. Stop me before this looks like the entire membership directory!!
