Perspective, by definition, is “a particular attitude toward, or way of, regarding something; a point of view.” The AIFD Foundation launched Perspectives as a virtual platform for designers to express, to expand thought, and to inspire. Each invited designer is offered the opportunity to select a topic of considerable interest and expand upon it through the illustration of floral design and the description of such. Teaching moments may amplify thought of the design itself, often leading the conversation far beyond the origination.
Today, we speak with Brenna Quan AIFD. Her artistic expression developed in early life, studying dance and theatre, eventually landing her on stages across the United States and Canada as a performer and choreographer. During this time, she discovered the emotional connection between flowers and the human spirit, making her keen on developing this art form.
Now an award-winning floral artist and educator based in Vancouver, Canada, she is recognized for her detailed design work in public exhibitions such as Fleurs de Villes, as well as imaginative works shared in demonstrations, on her social media platform and in various floral art book compilations.
For this Perspective: Impact
“This word gave new light to me as we, along with our global society, experienced an abrupt shutdown not long ago. We were all forced to shift the ways in which we lived our daily lives, re-evaluate our priorities, and understand how much we are interconnected. I had to wonder as to what impact would this have, not only on our personal journeys but also on our beloved industry. One thing that soon came to light was that flowers are essential! We were reminded that the special gift of flowers to oneself and others has more effect on mental wellness than we realized.” — Brenna Quan AIFD
When asked to create a short video for AIFD Foundation’s Perspective Series, Brenna thought this was a perfect opportunity to reflect on the various ways in which “impact” relates to our industry whether it be through emotional impact, physical impact and/or environmental impact. Brenna brings incredible talent to this topic. Her wealth of achievement as a competitor includes First Place in the 2016 & 2019 Pacific North West Design Competitions and First Place in the 2019 Maple Leaf Cup. Representing Canada, she was Runner up in 2016 Gateway to the Americas Cup. She has been a regular contributor for Florists’ Review magazine, the Fleurvana Summits, and other educational video series. She has presented Main Stage during AIFD Symposium Anaheim 2016, most recently in Las Vegas 2022, and is the current AIFD Northwest Chapter President.
When asked about her world of design, Brenna enthusiastically responded that, “The opportunities of knowledge sharing, inspiring creativity and evolving my style and design methods keep me energized. I hope that the perspective I shared gives food for thought on how this topic relates to our botanical expressions so that we may keep spreading joy through the beauty of flowers!”
