AIFD Presidential Year in Review

As I reflect on my year as President of AIFD, I am filled with immense pride, gratitude, and admiration for the incredible floral artists, educators, and friends I’ve met along the way. Though I only had the opportunity to visit five of our six chapters during my tenure, each visit left a lasting impact and reminded me of the powerful community we have built within AIFD.

My chapter visits began in September 2024 with the Southwest Chapter’s Design Show, held in the remarkable Mark Roberts Showroom and Design Studio. Hosted by Derrick Vasquez AIFD, Past National President and current Southwest Chapter President, the weekend was a true celebration of artistry and camaraderie. We were honored by the presence of floral legends Phil and Cathy Rulloda, along with Past Presidents Rocky Pollitz and Bob Gordon—their legacy and support continue to inspire.

October took me to the Northeast Chapter, where I was thrilled to be a featured designer at their Fall Fundraiser held at Bay State Wholesale Florist. The energy, participation, and creativity on display made this event a standout. I returned in November to judge the floral competitions at “Art that Blooms”, held at Bucks County Community College—a beautiful blend of floral design and fine art that showcased our members’ exceptional talents.

In February, I traveled to Michigan to attend the Great Lakes Floral Expo, hosted by our North Central Chapter. There, I participated in their Board of Directors meeting, judged several design competitions, and had the unique opportunity to see firsthand the remarkable efficiency of the new AIFD Evaluation Software developed by Mark Anderson of FloristWare. It’s a real game-changer for our organization.

March brought me to Kentucky for the Southern Chapter’s “Gather” event, held at the FFA facility. From teaching three hands-on classes to judging design competitions and sharing meals in our lakeside VRBO house, the experience was both personal and professional. Cooking dinner for a group of people I respect deeply, hearing their ideas on how AIFD can grow and evolve. These moments were priceless.

Finally, I made my way to Texas State for the South Central Chapter Expo. The warm Texas welcome, meaningful connections, and opportunity to serve as a guest evaluator for the Designer of the Year Competition made it an unforgettable event. Being honored with the “Star of Texas” award was the perfect close to an amazing visit—and one of the most memorable highlights of my presidency.

Although I wasn’t able to attend the Northwest Chapter’s event—rest assured, I’m holding you to a raincheck next year!

This year has been one of growth, connection, and inspiration. I’m so proud of how AIFD continues to evolve—thanks to all of you. From the deepest part of my heart, thank you for your trust, your creativity, and your unwavering commitment to excellence in floral design.

With gratitude and admiration,

Laurie Lemek

National President, AIFD 2024-2025
