Design Tools Added to “The AIFD Guide to Floral Design”

Let’s explore a few types of design tools added to the newest addition of “The AIFD Guide to
Floral Design”.

Design Egg
Design eggs allow us to create a beautiful, loosely gathered bouquet without all the fuss. This three-dimensional armature is shaped like an egg and allows designers to insert stems at an angle without requiring multiple stems to hold it all in place. This plastic form is more rigid than design wire or chicken wire that can also be used. The design eggs prohibits movement of the stems outside of the grid. It provides a stable base that allows the bouquet to keep a beautiful flowing shape without adding a ton of weight.

Design Pillow
Similar to the design egg, the design pillow is a plastic armature that allows a designer to create a loose and airy design while maintaining a solid base. The pillow can be place in or on a container to provide the base structure of the design. Unlike the egg, the pillow is designed to be used with containers, not hand bouquets. However, both armatures allow for a loosely gathered style without requiring the heavy physical and visual weight of a lot of greenery, wire, or branches as the armature.
