Judging Chelsea in Bloom 2022

*Editors Note: Please enjoy Part Two of this two-part “In Bloom” series. Part 1, Belgravia in Bloom was posted earlier this month and can be found here: https://aifdfocalpoints.com/judging-belgravia-in-bloom-2022/.

It is always a joy and huge privilege to be invited to judge the floral exhibits at the RHS

Chelsea Flower Show and it was just as wonderful when I received the invitation to judge

the floral exhibits for Belgravia in Bloom and Chelsea in Bloom this year from the RHS and Cadogan Estates.

Chelsea in Bloom 2022
Judged Tuesday 25th May 2022

2022’s theme was ‘British Icons’ and drew inspiration from the characters, symbols and emblems across the United Kingdom that make Great Britain and will bring everyone together to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee taking place the first week in June.

‘British Icons’ promised exciting floral installations, encapsulating the UK’s exceptional talent and character from across the fields of fashion, art, design, music, food, sport, literature and more and it didn’t disappoint!

The competition saw 97 participants showcasing floral displays, each reflecting their own unique interpretation of the theme.
The installations were judged by myself and 5 other judges and what a day we had! There were so many entrants, we had to split into 2 teams of 3.

Chelsea is a fairly large borough and one team took the famous Kings Road route and the other team (that I was part of) took Sloane Square and Sloane Street.

You can imagine how delighted I was to have a ride in a rickshaw to the top of Sloane Street, so that we could work our way back to Sloane Square on foot whilst judging all the incredible exhibits.

For this competition we calibrated our scores over lunch to ensure we were giving the correct awards to the duly deserved entrants.

  • Best Floral Display award.
  • Highly Commended award.
  • Innovation award.

All other entrants were then ranked with a gold, silver, bronze or a merit. Just some of the fabulous exhibits for Chelsea in Bloom 2022.
