Sometimes, all it takes is an invitation to get people talking.
That was the idea behind our Southern Chapter Get Together meetings: create a welcoming space where members can connect, share ideas, ask questions, and get to know one another beyond a name or a social media post.
With members spread across our region, we don’t always have the opportunity to see each other in person. But we don’t have to wait until the next Symposium or educational event to stay connected.
These virtual gatherings are a simple way to bring us together and remind us that we are part of a community that extends far beyond our own shops and design spaces.
As Southern Chapter President, I want our members to feel that they have a place in the conversation.
You don’t need a presentation, a big announcement, or years of experience to join us. Bring a question, share something you are working on, or just come to listen!
We all have something to offer, and sometimes a casual conversation is where a helpful idea or a new friendship begins. Our floral careers may look different, but we understand many of the same challenges and joys.
Making time for one another gives us a chance to share that experience, offer encouragement, and learn from the people within our own AIFD family.
My hope is that other chapters will give this a try, too. It doesn’t need to be complicated or become another big project for your board.
Choose a time, send an invitation, and start with a conversation. Ask your board members to lead, ask what they would enjoy discussing and give them room to help shape future gatherings.
We put so much effort into planning programs and events, and those opportunities are valuable. There is also value in simply showing up for one another between those events.
A chapter grows stronger when its members feel welcome, heard, and included. Sometimes, the first step is as simple as saying, “Let’s get together!”
