The AIFD Education Committee is continuing to provide concepts and examples of the terminology provided in the Third Edition of The AIFD Guide to Floral Design: Terms, Techniques, & Traditions. Please see examples of two (2) of the principles below.
Every month in Focal Points, the committee will share more examples to expand on new terminology. If you would like to purchase the latest (Third Edition) of the Guide, please visit here: The AIFD Guide to Floral Design – Schifferbooks.
Flatlay: A photography term that has been adapted to floral design in which botanical and floral products are arranged or displayed on a flat surface in a decorative manner, then photographed from above.
Flat lay pictures or detail pictures are very common and a beautiful way to combine the florals and colors that are highlighted throughout the wedding into one snapshot of the day. The important details like invitation, rings, shoes, wedding colors are all brought together with floral accents.
Cutting Cake – A small decorated cake for the wedding couple to cut for ceremonial photographs.
Typically, a cutting cake would be too small to be served to all of the guests as they may be serving a different dessert or have a dessert table with a variety of desserts. Having just a single or double layer cake makes for wonderful wedding pictures and an opportunity for the wedding couple to cut share in the traditional first bite of dessert as married couple.
