Couple weeks ago, I received an email from Louisa Lam AIFD, asking for a submission to Focal Points Blog. Thankful for her encouragement, I am willing to participate and happy to share with you all what I have been doing during this COVID-19 pandemic!

18th March the day when Malaysia announced ‘Movement control order’ what I knew was I needed to stock up food and necessities for my family.

I was having mixed feelings and wasn’t thinking much of what would happen to my work. Before COVID hit us, we would have a chiller that could pack 400 stems of flowers which I did pack it to the max and didn’t know after that we were not allowed to travel more than 10 km from where we live for any other reason except for buying necessities. During that time we had many orders for condolences and we had to ask Grab to assist in delivering the flowers to the funeral parlors. For normal days we only paid rm15 for a trip but during those time we paid some up to 8x of the normal fee. We had to buy a box of vegetable enable to buy basic fresh cut flowers from Cameron Highland, that’s the deal for the flowers to travel to us! Sigh… We were not thinking about the profit so much but was focusing on attending to the regular clients.

But thankfully, with the help of technology, I could have Zoom online sessions with the 2 students who are preparing for online AIFD test and another one from Hong Kong. We got together and had online tutorial and discussions about how we we’re going to go about with practical floral arrangements classes. Very soon after relaxing, we began the theory session with another 2 from Philippines and one in a Dubai studying from ‘AIFD Guide to Floral Design’. Encouraging the people who are passionate to participate in the PFDE was my aim at the time as I had spent most of my life with flowers and it makes me think “in a world as such, what can I do to pass on what I have to help the people who choose the same path as me.”

In the month of June till now we had been on virtual classes with Hong Kong and Malaysia as the materials are available. Philippines is still put on hold due to the Unstable condition of the country, but I do hope it gets better soon.

In short, we are living in an uncertain and uneasy time, but I am very grateful to God and the students around me. The passion that puts together create a spark of Hope in our mist. Though now in the new norm, adjusting to the requests of students n customers, adjusting to the new budget for work is a good challenge that pushes me, which I am grateful for 😃 In Malaysia with the highland blooms n tropical floral n fauna, we are more than blessed to be able to keep going with the business n classes.
